A practical solution to restoring lost teeth
A person’s smile contributes greatly to how they are viewed by others as well as how they view themselves. A missing tooth can quickly impact confidence and overall self-image, and restoring a lost tooth can make a big difference when it comes to quality of life.
If you’ve lost a tooth, or if your tooth has become damaged beyond repair, a restorative treatment option like a dental bridge may be a great solution. We’ll work with you to determine the best treatment plan for your smile based on your unique dental issues and needs.
Why Replace a Lost Tooth?
Not only are there cosmetic reasons to replace a lost tooth, but there are also health reasons. When you’re missing a tooth, the longer you go without the space filled, the more likely your other teeth are to shift and move around your mouth. This can cause a variety of both cosmetic and dental problems, including:
- Misaligned teeth
- Difficulty chewing
- Issues with your bite
- Added stress to teeth and jaw
Dental Bridges at Burnaby Dental Centre
A dental bridge is a prosthetic device that fills in the gap between one or more natural (or artificial) teeth. A bridge consists of two crowns that are placed on the teeth that sit on each side of the gap. Between the two crowns is one or more prosthetic teeth that are cemented and held in place by the crowns.
For dental bridges to be placed, the patient must have a healthy tooth on either side of the gap that can support the crowns.
What To Expect at Your Dental Bridge Appointment
Every appointment at Burnaby Dental Centre begins with a discussion of your specific smile goals. We want to understand what you want to achieve as well as any oral health concerns or problems you’re dealing with.
Then, your dentist will perform a complete oral exam, which may include x-rays, and discuss your dental bridge treatment plan and how it works with your schedule and your budget.
Placing the dental bridge will involve both preparing the existing teeth and placing the bridge:
- The area being treated will be numbed with a local anesthetic to prevent pain and discomfort during treatment.
- The anchor teeth on each side of the gap will then be shaped and filed so that the dental crowns will fit onto the teeth.
- Scans and impressions are then taken for the final prosthetic device to be custom made for your mouth. The crowns and false teeth will be made in a color that matches that of your existing teeth for a more natural appearance.
- When the permanent bridge is created, it will be fitted to your mouth to ensure it looks flawless.
- The bridge will be cemented in place and the crowns and prosthetic teeth will be polished and cleared of any excess cement.

Dental Bridges FAQ
How long do dental bridges last?
Modern dental bridges typically last between five and seven years. However, some patients have found that with great oral hygiene practices, their bridge lasts up to 10 years or more.
What are the benefits of dental bridges?
Dental bridges are an affordable, less invasive procedure than other treatments that address missing teeth. Along with those benefits, bridges also accomplish the task of holding your other teeth in position and preventing teeth from becoming mobile.
