What to expect at your dental veneers appointment
Every appointment at Burnaby Dental Centre begins with a discussion of your specific oral health and smile goals. We want to understand what you want to achieve as well as any oral health concerns or problems you’re dealing with.
Then, your dentist will perform a complete oral exam, which may include x-rays, and discuss whether dental veneers are a good option for you. We’ll discuss the veneer treatment plan and how it will work with your budget and your schedule.
While no-prep veneers will be adhered to the teeth directly, placing porcelain veneers will involve prepping the teeth that will hold the veneers:
- Local anesthetic will be applied to the area being treated in order to prevent any discomfort or pain during prep and placement.
- Some enamel will be removed from the tooth in order for the veneer to properly adhere and some of the tooth material may also be removed so that the veneer fits perfectly in place.
- A dental impression will be performed so that the veneers can be custom-made to fit your teeth and match your smile perfectly.
Your custom-made veneers will then be placed on the prepped teeth and examined to be sure they are a comfortable fit and their aesthetics are acceptable.

How long do dental veneers last on teeth?
While no-prep veneers last up to 7 years in some cases, porcelain veneers last much longer. Some patients have seen porcelain veneers last up to 13 years before they require repair or replacement.
Is it painful to get veneers?
In the case of no-prep veneers, there is virtually zero pain or discomfort since no tooth enamel needs to be removed.
With porcelain veneers, the level of pain experienced depends on how many teeth are being treated. When permanent veneers are only placed on a few teeth, patients experience little to no discomfort after treatment. When a large number of teeth are being treated, there may be mild temporary pain afterwards, but over-the-counter pain relievers are sufficient to make the patient comfortable
